Academy/Training
No, the academy is not live-in.
The academy is 4 weeks, including one week of orientation.
Schedules may vary by facility.
Academy training is conducted at the facility where you are hired.
Academies generally begin every four weeks and are conducted on a 40-hour-per-week schedule. Start dates vary by facility.
If you have never worked for the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections - Corrections Services: Yes, you will need to complete the full academy.
If you have previously worked for the agency, whether the full academy is required depends on several factors: the length of your prior service, the job title you held, and how long you have been separated from the department.
Salary & Benefits
Salary may differ depending on facility:
EHCC/LSP:
Cadet Base Pay $22.58 hourly
Sergeant Base Pay $24.16 hourly
Master Sergeant Base Pay $26.70 hourly
All Other Facilities:
Cadet Base Pay $20.50 hourly
Sergeant Base Pay $21.94 hourly
Master Sergeant Base Pay $24.24 hourly
Employees are eligible for reallocation from Cadet to Sergeant after six months and eligible for reallocation from Sergeant to Master Sergeant after one year of service.
Premium pay amounts may differ by facility and is determined by length of service:
EHCC/LSP:
0-1 year $1.00 per hour worked
1-2 years $1.40 per hour worked
2-3 years $1.80 per hour worked
3+ years $2.00 per hour worked
All Other Facilities:
0-1 year $.50 per hour worked
1-2 years $.70 per hour worked
2-3 years $.90 per hour worked
3+ years $1.00 per hour worked
Health insurance: medical/dental/vision are offered
Employee cost: Varies by selected plan
Retirement plan: LASERS Hazardous Duty
Vacation/Sick time: 8-16 hours earned per month depending on years of service
Holidays: 10 per year and any declared by the Governor
Uniforms are provided.
Work Schedule
12 hour shifts are the most prevalent although some 8 and 10 hour shifts are utilized.

Career Development
Chase teams are specialized tracking units highly skilled in land navigation, tracking, and fugitive apprehension.
Tactical teams respond to riots, hostage situations, barricaded subjects, and conducting cell extractions for non-compliant inmates.
Both teams may be deployed to assist local law enforcement/Probation & Parole during public events, natural disasters, or statewide emergencies.
